Blackbird Early Years Music was founded in 2014 by Helen. Its aim is to bridge the gap between baby music classes and toddler singing classes, and more formal one to one instrumental lessons. Helen designed the 5 level curriculum, drawing on a wide experience of education work with ages 0-100.
Music Foundation Classes
In these classes, the children are taught in small groups, of 3-6, which allows them to build confidence, as they get to know each other, and also to receive individual attention during the classes. Through over 50 original songs, by award-winning composer Dominic Sewell and actor Laura Trundle, and fun and engaging activities the children are taught the rudiments of music, such as pulse, dynamics, rhythm and pitch. They can progress to reading basic rhythmic notation by Levels 4 and 5. All the blackbird teachers are professional performers, who play live music for the children every week, something which is central to the musical experience of the children. Many of our children progress to taking instrumental lessons, including piano lessons, guitar lessons, drum lessons and violin lessons.
Samba Drumming/Musicianship
In these sessions, children have the chance to learn samba drumming and musicianship in bigger group classes (with a ratio of 1:8).  Samba Drumming is led by Catherine Ring, a first class graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and member of Colin Currie Percussion Group, and Ensemble Bash.  The sessions are full of engaging activities, with older children working both with the younger children, and on their own. Children Choir
With expert and experienced conductor Douglas Watts on board (Bristol Show Choir), Blackbird Children’s Choir gives children the wonderful opportunity for communal singing, from the ages of 4-8. We work on a wide range of songs, from traditional to pop. Find out more here.
Blackbird Early Years music was created from a real passion to provide the most positive start possible to children’s musical journey and we look forward to taking that journey with your children!
